Addition and Subtraction of Measuring Mass | Adding and Subtracting Kg and g Weights

Mass is the property of a matter. We can add or subtract the mass of two objects. This web page explains how to add/subtract the mass of two objects. Also, we have to know the relation between kg and g. You can also check the solved examples of addition and subtraction of Mass for a better understanding of the concept.

We will discuss the addition and subtraction of measuring mass. If two objects are compared, we can guess which is heavier and which is lighter. Our guess depends on the experience, seeing the objects, and weighing the objects in our hand span or palm.

By using Simple balance we can say which object is heavier and which is lighter. A balance has two pans and a beam. We can measure the exact mass with the help of a balance and weights. We know, about the weights of one kilogram, 500 grams, 250 grams, etc.

Units of Mass Measurement and their Equivalent Weights

One kilogram is the measure of the mass of an object having one kilogram of weight. Its abbreviation is kg. Grams abbreviation is g.

1 kg = 1000 g

or, 1000 g = 1 kg

Gram is a part of one kilogram if it is divided into 1000 equal parts.

½ kg = 500 g

or, 500 g = ½ kg

500 grams weight is half of one kilogram.

250 g = ¼ kg

250 grams weight is one-fourth of one kilogram.

Addition and Subtraction of Mass Measurement Examples

Here we will find the difference and sum of measuring mass in kilograms and grams. Consider the examples related to the addition and subtraction of mass.

Example 1:

Ram has to buy some wheat from a shop. The shopkeeper weighs 8 kg once and then 2 kg. Find how much wheat Ram has bought?

Solution:

First, the shopkeeper weighs= 8 kg of wheat

Then he weighs                   =2 kg of wheat

Total amount of wheat   = 8 kg + 2 kg = 10 kg

Therefore, Ram bought 10 kg of wheat.

Example 2:

Siri purchased 3 kg apples, 2 kg pears, and 3 kg mangoes. Find the total weight of fruits purchased.

Solution:

Apples                   = 3 kg

Pears                    = 2 kg

Mangoes                = 3 kg

Therefore, total weight of fruits purchased = 3 kg + 2 kg + 3 kg = 8 kg fruits.

Example 3:

(i) Subtract 864 grams from 562 grams

(ii) Add 3 kg  and 750 grams

Solution:

(i) 8  6  4 g

  5  6  2  g

3   0    2  g

(ii) 3 kg 750 g

We know that 1 kg=1000 g

Multiply kg with 1000 to convert it into grams.

= 3 × 1000 g + 750 g

= 3000 g + 750 g

=3750 g

Example 4:

Raki weighs 70 kg and ram weighs 65 kg. Find the total weights of both of them and the difference between them?

Solution:

Raki Weighs=70 kg

Ram weighs=65 kg

Total weighs of Raki and Ram=70+65=135 kg.

Difference between Raki and Ram=70-65=5 kg.

Example 5:

Subtract the weights 5 kg 390 g from 8 kg 120 g

Solution:

kg     g

8     1   2   0

-5     3   9   0

Example 6:

Subtract the weight of  6 kg from 800 g

Solution:

We know that 1 kg=1000.

Multiply the number of kg with 1000 to convert it into grams.

6 kg=6×1000=6000 g

Now subtract 800 from 6000.

6  0  0   0 g

–   8  0   0 g

_____________

5  2  0   0

______________

Therefore, subtraction of 800g from 6000 is 5200.

Example 7:

Subtract the weight of 5 kg 320 g from 8 kg 250 g

Solution:

We have to subtract 5 kg 320 g from 8 kg 250 g

250 g<320

Borrow 1000 from 8 kg and 250 g1250 then subtract 320

1250-320=930

8 kg becomes 7 kg

5kg is subtracted from 7 kg

7 kg-5 kg=2 kg

kg    g

8     2   5   0

-5    3   2    0

2      9     3    0

Therefore, the subtraction of 5 kg 320 g from 8 kg 250 g is 2 kg 930 g.

Example 8:

(i)Add the weights 2 kg and 900 g

(ii)subtract the weight of 3 kg 188 from 6 kg 120 g

Solution:

We know that 1 kg=1000

Multiply the number of kg with 1000 to convert it into grams.

2 × 1000=2000 g

Add 2000,900

2  0  0  0 g

+9   0  0 g

_____________

2 9  0   0       g

_____________

Therefore, the addition of 2000+900=2900.

(ii) subtract the weight of 3 kg 188 from 6 kg 120 g

We have to subtract 3 kg 188 g from 6 kg 120 g

120 g<188g

Borrow 1000 from 6 kg and 120 g becomes1120 then subtract 188

1120-188=932

6 kg becomes 5 kg

5kg is subtracted from 3 kg

5 kg-3 kg=2 kg

kg    g

6      1   2   0

-3      1   8    8

2      9     3    2

Therefore, the subtraction of weight of 3 kg 188 from 6 kg 120 g is 2 kg 932 g.

Example 9:

(i)Add the weights 7 kg and 500 g

(ii)subtract the weight of 1 kg 273 from 3kg 189 g

Solution:

We know that 1 kg=1000

Multiply the number of kg with 1000 to convert it into grams.

7 × 1000=7000 g

Add 7000,500

7  0  0  0 g

+5   0  0 g

_____________

7 5  0   0       g

_____________

Therefore, the addition of 7000+500=7500.

(ii) subtract the weight of 1 kg 273 g from 3 kg 189 g

We have to subtract 1 kg 273 g from 3 kg 189 g

189 g<273g

Borrow 1000 from 3 kg and 189 g becomes1189 then subtract 273.

1189-273=916

3 kg becomes 2 kg as we borrowed from 3 kg.

1kg is subtracted from 2 kg

2 kg-1 kg=1 kg

kg    g

3      1    8    9

-1     2    7    3

2      9     1    6

Therefore, the subtraction of 1 kg 273g from 3 kg 189 g is 2 kg 916 g.
