Follow the simple steps provided below to add hours, minutes and seconds. They are along the lines

  1. Add the hours
  2. Add the minutes and If the number of minutes is 60 or more do the following:
    • Subtract 60 from the number of minutes.
    • Increase the number of hours by one.
    • Repeat this process if the number of minutes is still 60 or more.
  3. If the number of seconds is 60 or more than 60 then do the following:
    • Subtract 60 from the number of seconds.
    • Increase the number of minutes by one.
    • Repeat this process if the number of seconds is still 60 or more.

Addition of Hours Minutes and Seconds Examples

Example 1:
Add 2 hours 25 minutes and 1 hour 15 minutes?
Solution:
Step 1: Add the hours together, we get 2 + 1 = 3 hours
Step 2: Add the minutes together, we get 25 + 15 = 40 minutes
Therefore, the result of the addition is 3 hours 40 minutes

Example  2:
Add 3 hours 35 minutes 50 seconds and 2 hours 40 minutes 34 seconds.
Solution:

Step 1: Add the hours together, we get 3 + 2 =5 hours
Step 2: Add the minutes together, we get 35 + 40 = 75 minutes,
As the number of minutes is more than 60, subtract 60 minutes from that we get 15 minutes and increase the number of hours by 1 i.e 5 + 1 = 6 hours
Step 3: Add the second together, we get 50 + 34 = 84 seconds.
As the number of seconds is more than 60, subtract 60 seconds from that we get 24 seconds and increase the number of minutes by 1 i.e 15 + 1 = 16 minutes
Therefore, the result is 6 hours 16 minutes 24 seconds.

Example 3:
Add 5 hours 45 minutes and 2 hour 35 minutes.
Solution:
Step 1: Add the hours together, we get 5+ 2 = 7 hours
Step 2: Add the minutes together, we get 45 + 35 = 80 minutes
As there is a number of minutes is more than 60, subtract 60 minutes from that we get 20 minutes and increase the number of hours by 1 i.e 7 + 1 = 8 hours
Therefore, the result of the addition is 8 hours 20 minutes

Example 4:
Add 5 hours 13 minutes 56 seconds and 2 hours 55 minutes.
Solution:
Step 1: Add the hours together, we get 5 + 2 =7 hours
Step 2: Add the minutes together, we get 13 + 55 = 68 minutes,
As the number of minutes is more than 60, subtract 60 minutes from that we get 8 minutes and increase the number of hours by 1 i.e 7 + 1 = 8 hours
Step 3: Add the second together, now there are no seconds mentioned in the question so consider 0 seconds for that, we get 56 + 0 = 56 seconds.
Therefore, the result is 8 hours 8 minutes 56 seconds.

Example 5:
A bus leaves for Hyderabad at 1:30 p.m. It takes 2 hr. 25 min to reach there. At what time will it reach Hyderabad?
Solution:
Add the time duration to the given time i.e
By adding hours together, we get 1 + 2 = 3 hours and by adding minutes together we get 30 +25 = 55 minutes.
Therefore, By 3:55 p.m the bus will reach Hyderabad.

Example 6:
Rob travelled 4 hr. 45 min. by bus and 2 hr. 25 min. by train to Bangalore. Calculate the time he spent travelling to Bangalore.
Solution:
Add both the time duration of travelling i.e
By adding hours together, we get 4 + 2 = 6 hours and by adding minutes together we get 45 +25 = 70 minutes.
As the number of minutes exceeded 60, subtract 60 from that we get 10 minutes and increase by 1 to the hours i.e 6 + 1 = 7
Therefore, the Total time he spent travelling is 7 hours 10 minutes.
