Large Number – Definition, Arithmetic Operations, Examples | How to Read & Write Large Numbers?

Large numbers are the numbers that we don’t use in our daily routines. Mostly these numbers are frequently used in bank statements or use in the counting of the population. In mathematics, when we compare the two numbers the bigger number is known as a Large Number. Large Numbers are denoted in standard form. In the number system, we write the numbers with the place values.

Every number has its place value like one’s, tens, hundreds, etc., and a number has a face value it’s nothing but the number itself is the place value. For instance, take the number 263, here the face value of 2 is itself 2 but the place value of 2 is two hundred. We separate the large numbers with a comma by dividing them into groups.

Groups are into three sub-divisions that are ones, tens, and hundreds, and the next group with thousands, ten thousand, and hundred thousand, and etc. We start writing the large numbers from the largest group left to the right. For example, if you take the number 45237, now separate the number with three subdivisions as one group and write the number with place values of digits. Now, we write the number as 45,237 (forty-five thousand, two hundred thirty-seven).

What are Large Numbers?

Large Numbers are nothing but lakhs, millions, billions, and soon. Normally, these are not used as our regular numbers. These are usually represented in terms of a thousand million or by an exponent form. These millions, billions differ from one number system to another system. To write the six-digit, seven-digit large number need to use commas in two places, one place to separate ONES and THOUSANDS, another place to separate is THOUSANDS and MILLIONS period.

The very large numbers are slightly like below:

1,000,000,000 are “one billion”.

1,000,000,000,000 are “one thousand billion”.

1,000,000,000,000,000 are “one million billion”.

1,000,000,000,000,000,000 are “one billion billion”.

1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 are “a thousand billion billion” and so on…

Now, learn how to read and write the large numbers from the below example:

Example:

How to Read and Write the large number 652385?

In order to read & write large numbers, first, we have to separate the given number in groups as ONES, THOUSANDS, LAKHS, and soon as given.

In Ones, we have the place values hundreds, tens, ones. In Thousands, have the place values thousands, ten thousand. In Lakhs, also have the place values lakhs, ten lakhs.

Now, take the given number 652385 and divide the ONE’s period by marking a comma after three places from the right

6, 52, 385
↓  ↓   ↓
↓   ↓   three hundred eighty-five
↓   fifty-two thousand
Six lakhs

The digits that are formed as one group are read together, as well as the name of the period like ONES, THOUSANDS, and so on.

To write this Large Number six lakhs, fifty-two thousand, three hundred eighty-five, we use the place value chart to represent the digits.

Lakhs Period Thousands Period One’s Period
L TTh Th H T O
6 5 2 3 8 5

The number in the above place value chart can be written by keeping commas as 6, 52, 385.

Arithmetic Operations on Large Numbers

In a number system, we do many arithmetic operations for different types of numbers. Basically, arithmetic operations show us about the operation of numbers, use of numbers where it helps us in many ways. Arithmetic Operations are Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division. Actually, we use these operations in our daily aspect for calculating different types of things. Let’s learn and perform these operations on Large Numbers in detail from the below examples.

Large Numbers Examples

Example 1:

Find the addition of Large Numbers 785421, 25462?

Solution:

First, we have to take the given large numbers. In adding large numbers we have to keep the numbers on top of each other of both addends.

Now, we line up the columns as one’s place in one column, tens place in one column, etc.

We add these places as column by column from right to left side. Starts the addition from one’s place, tens place, and so on.

Let’s see this addition of given numbers

7 8 5 4 2 1
0 2 5 4 6 2   (+)
—————
8 1 0 8 8 3

Thus, the sum of the given Large Numbers is 8, 10, 883.

Example 2:

Subtract the Large Numbers 45621, 34261?

Solution:

Take the given numbers, keep the numbers on top of each other for subtraction.

Now, place the digits as a column by column from the right side to the left side. This is also known as column subtraction.

We start the column subtraction from one’s place, tens place, and etc.

Let’s look at the subtraction of given Large Numbers.

example on subtraction of large numbers

Therefore, the subtraction of given Large Numbers is 11, 360.

Example 3:

Calculate the multiplication of Large Numbers 23452, 1256?

Solution:

Write the given numbers on top of each other, and line up the numbers.

Now, we take one’s place digit of the bottom number and multiply it with the top number, then you get one answer.

And, then take the tens place digit of the bottom number and multiply it with the top number, and now, you have to write the answer in tens place in the next line of the above result.

Next, we should add both answers to get the multiplication of the given Large Numbers.

The Multiplication of Large Numbers is as follows:

Therefore, the Multiplication of given Large Numbers is 29, 455, 712.
