Measuring Length – Definitions, Units, Examples | How is Length Measured?

Have you heard about the word length? As we know, we use this word length for various purposes. So, let’s talk about the purpose of the length and how to measure the length, what is the length? and few examples of measuring length. By end of this article, I assure you that you can get a clear knowledge about the length and the units used for measuring. Let’s go through this page and know everything related to the word length and how to measure the objects with different unit terms.

What is Length?

Length is the term used to define an object size from one point to another point and also says the distance from the start point to the endpoint and says how long an object is. We use some units to measure the length between the objects, places, things, and so on. For example, we measure the distance of a road. Length is measured in meters, centimeters, etc.

Measuring Length | Measurement of Length

Measurement is the comparison between an unknown quantity with a known quantity. Measurements used to find length are in meters, centimeters, kilometers, etc. We use meters, centimeters to measure smaller units, whereas to find longer distances we use kilometers. Measuring length is used to measure the length of an object with measuring tools. The measuring tools we use are as follows to make you understand clearly.

Measurement tools for finding length

For example, to know the height of the students we use the feet scale. To know the length of the pencil we use a ruler to measure in inches and to measure the cloth we use tape and it contains ‘cm’ and ‘m’.

Units of Length and its Measurement

The term unit is a standard comparison to measure everything. To maintain Standard Unit of Length Measurement for objects, we have International System Units (SI) that are followed by everyone. For measuring how far a place is, we need to measure the distance between the places. We can perform arithmetic operations in terms of units as we do for ordinary numbers. The units we use to measure and their equivalent are as follows

10 millimeters (mm)   = 1 centimeter (cm)
10 centimeters           = 1 decimeter (d)
10 decimeters            = 1 meter (m)
10 meters                   = 1 dekameter (da)
10 dekameter             = 1 hectometer (h)
10 hectometers          = 1 kilometer (km)

Meters (m), centimeters (cm), and kilometers (km) are the unit terms we use frequently to measure the length between any two objects. For instance, to measure a pencil, cloth, and beds, etc. we use the terms m, cm. To measure the distance between two buildings we use km.

One hundred centimeters is equal to one meter. Simply, can denote as 100cm = 1m.

One thousand meters is equal to one kilometer. Simply, can denote as 1000m = 1km.

Length Measurement Examples

Example 1:

Diya purchased 54m rope and Rupa purchased 45m 25cm cloth. What is the total length of clothes that are purchased by both?

Solution:

Length of cloth purchased by Diya = 54m

Length of cloth purchased by Rupa = 45m 25cm

Here, we have to find the total length of the cloth purchased by both the girls.

Now, add the measurements given

54m 00cm

+ 45m 25cm
–––––––––––––
99m 25cm

Thus, The total length of the cloth purchased by them is 99m 25cm.

Example 2:

Convert 586 centimeters into meters?

Solution:

We know that 100cm = 1m

Now, have to convert 586cm to meters.

The formula to convert centimeters to meters is 1 cm = 0.01 m or m = cm ÷100

Now use the length conversion formula, 1cm = 0.01m

586cm = 586×0.01 = 5.86meters.

Therefore, 586cm is equal to 5.86m.

Example 3:

Convert 65 centimeters to meters?

Solution:

As we know, 100cm = 1m, and 1cm = 0.01m.

Now, 65cm to meters.

So, 65×0.01= 0.65m.

Hence, 65cm is equivalent to 0.65m.

Example 4:

Convert 623 meters to centimeters and kilometers?

Solution:

We are aware of

1m = 100cm

1000m = 1km and 1m = 0.001km.

Now, converting meters to centimeters.

623m = 623×100= 62300cm

Now, converting meters to kilometers

623m = 623×0.001= 0.623km.

Hence, 623m is equal to 62300cm and 0.623km.

Example 5:

Convert 55m 26cm into centimeters.

Solution:

First, convert meters into centimeters, and next, we add that result to the centimeters we have already.

We knew that 1m=100cm.

So, 55m = 55×100= 5500cm.

Now, we add 5500cm to 26cm i.e., 5500cm + 26cm = 5526cm.

Therefore, 55m 26cm in centimeters as 5526cm.

Example 6:

Sindhu purchased 15m 84cm of cloth. She used 4m 45cm of cloth from the purchased cloth. How much cloth is left with her?

Solution:

The total length of cloth Sindhu purchased is 15m 84cm.

The length of cloth she used is 4m 45cm.

Now, we have to find the length of the cloth that left with her. So, for that, we have to subtract the cloth used from the total cloth purchased.

15m 84cm

– 4m 45cm
——————
11m 39cm

Hence, the length of the cloth left is 11m 39cm.
