How to Subtract Time with Hours, Minutes, and Seconds?

Example 1:
Find the difference of  5 hours 28 minutes 57 seconds, 2 hours 16 minutes 25 seconds

Solution:

subtraction of time example 1
step 1: subtract seconds i.e. 57-25=32
step 2: subtract minutes i.e. 28-16=12
step 3: subtract hours i.e. 5-2=3
Therefore, the time is 3 hours 12 minutes 32 seconds.

Example 2:
Subtract 15 hours 30 minutes 20 seconds from 20 hours 20 minutes 10 seconds

Solution:

subtraction of time example 2
Step 1: Subtract seconds. We know  10< 20, borrow 1 min from 30 min i.e add 60 sec to 10 sec we will get 70 seconds, so the difference is 70 – 20 = 50 seconds.
Step 2: Subtract minutes, We know 20 < 30, we will borrow 1 hour i.e add 60 minutes to 20 min we get 80 minutes, the difference is 79-30 = 49 minutes.
Step 3: Subtract hours, the difference is 19 – 15 = 4 hours.
Therefore, the difference is 4 hours 49 minutes 50 seconds.

Example 3:
Find the difference of 9 hours 40 minutes 10 seconds, 22 hours 18 minutes 8 seconds

Solution:

subtraction of time example 3
Step 1: Subtract seconds. We know  8< 10, borrow 1 min from 18 min i.e add 60 sec to 8 sec we will get 68 seconds, so the difference is 68 – 10 = 58 seconds.
Step 2: Subtract minutes, We know 17 < 40, we will borrow 1 hour i.e add 60 minutes to 17 min we get 77 minutes, the difference is 77-40 = 37 minutes.
Step 3: Subtract hours, the difference is 21 – 9 = 12 hours.
Therefore, the difference is 12 hours 37 minutes 58 seconds.

Example 4:
Subtract 21 hours 10 minutes 29 seconds from 33 hours 2 minutes 15 seconds

Solution:

subtraction of time example 4
Step 1: Subtract seconds. We know  15< 29, borrow 1 min from 2 min i.e add 60 sec to 15 sec we will get 75 seconds, so the difference is 75 – 29 = 46 seconds.
Step 2: Subtract minutes, We know 1 < 10, we will borrow 1 hour i.e add 60 minutes to 1 min we get 61 minutes, the difference is 61-10 = 51 minutes.
Step 3: Subtract hours, We know 32> 21the difference is 32 – 21 = 11 hours.
Therefore, the difference is 11 hours 51 minutes 46 seconds.

Example 5:
Subtract 12 hours 50 minutes 24 seconds from 42 hours 25 minutes 35 seconds

Solution:

subtraction of time example 5
Step 1: Subtract seconds. So the difference is 35 – 24 = 11 seconds.
Step 2: Subtract minutes, We know 25 < 50, we will borrow 1 hour i.e add 60 minutes to 25 min we get 85 minutes, the difference is 85-50 = 35 minutes.
Step 3: Subtract hours, We know 41> 12 the difference is 41 – 12 = 29 hours.
Therefore, the difference is 29 hours 35 minutes 11 seconds.

Example 6:
Subtract 22 hours 24 minutes 27 seconds from 24 hours 17 minutes 48 seconds

Solution:

subtraction of time example 6
Step 1: Subtract seconds.  So the difference is 48 – 27 = 21 seconds.
Step 2: Subtract minutes, We know 17 < 24, we will borrow 1 hour i.e add 60 minutes to 17 min we get 77 minutes, So the difference is 77-24 = 53 minutes.
Step 3: Subtract hours, We know 23> 22 the difference is 23 – 22 = 1hours.
Therefore, the difference is 1 hour 53 minutes 21 seconds.

Example 7:
45 hours 4 minutes 16 seconds – 26 hours 14 minutes 18 seconds

Solution:

subtraction of time example 7
Step 1: Subtract seconds. We know  16< 18, borrow 1 min from 4 min i.e add 60 sec to 16 sec we will get 76 seconds, so the difference is 76 – 18 = 58 seconds.
Step 2: Subtract minutes, We know 3 < 14, we will borrow 1 hour i.e add 60 minutes to 3 min we get 63 minutes, the difference is 63-14 = 49 minutes.
Step 3: Subtract hours, We know 44> 26 the difference is 44 – 26 = 18 hours.
Therefore, the difference is 18  hours 49  minutes 58 seconds.

Example 8:
Raju traveled 8 hours 50 minutes 38 seconds to the picnic with his family. He traveled 5 hours 25 minutes 14 seconds by car. Due to the breakdown of the car he traveled remaining by bus. How much time does he travel by bus?

Solution:

Total time Raju spend travelling= 8 hours 50 minutes 38 seconds
Time spent in car=5 hours 25 minutes 14 seconds
Time spent to travel by bus=Total time Raju spend traveling – Time spent to travel by bus
=8 hours 50 minutes 38 seconds- 5hours 25 minutes 14 seconds
= 3 hours 25 minutes 24 seconds
Hence, Raju spent time to travel by bus= 3 hours 25 minutes 24 seconds

Example 9:
Sony went to the examination hall at 9.30 AM. she came out of the examination hall at 12.15 PM. How much time did she spend in the examination hall?

Solution:

Sony went to the examination hall = 9.30 AM
Sony came out of the examination hall =12.15 PM
Time spent by sony in the examination hall= Sony went to the examination hall-Sony came out of the examination hall
=9.30 – 12.15
By subtracting minutes, As we know 15<30 We will borrow 60 minutes and add it to 15 we get 75, then subtract 75-30= 45.
Subtract hours, 11-9=2.
Time spent by sony in the examination hall= 2 hours 45 minutes.

Srivani went to the temple =4.15
she came to the house = 06.10
Time is taken to reach home= Srivani went to the temple – she came to the house
Subtract minutes, 10< 15, We will borrow 60 minutes and add it to 10 we get 70, then subtract 70-15= 55.
Subtract hours, 5-4=1.
Time spent by sony in the examination hall= 1 hour 55 minutes.
