Variable Speed: If the object or body travels at different distances in the same intervals of time then it is said to be moving with variable speed.

Average Speed: If a moving body travels in different distances like d1, d2, d3…. with different speeds V1, V2, V3,.. Vn m/sec in time t1, t2, t3…….tn seconds.
The average speed of the body = Total Distance traveled/Total unit time
= d1 + d2 + d3….dn/t1 + t2 + t3 + …..tn

2.      1 kilometres = 1000 meters = 0.6214 mile
3.      1 mile = 1760 yards = 5280 feet
4.      1 hour = 60 minutes = 3600 seconds
5.      1 mph = (1 × 5280)/(1 × 3600) = 22/15 ft/sec
6.      1 mile = 1.609 kilometers
7.      To convert from km/hr to m/sec, we multiply by 5/18

8.      To convert from m/sec to km/hr, we multiply by 18/5
So, 1m/sec = 18/5 km/hr = 3.6km/hr

A car travels 140 kilometers in 4 hours. Find the speed of a car?
Solution:
A car travel = 140 kilometres
Time taken = 4 hours
speed is defined as the distance covered per unit time
Speed = distance travelled/ Time taken
If the distance is in kilometers and the time is in hours.
Therefore the units of measurement speed in kilometers per hour
Speed = 140/4
= 35 kilometres/hour

Example 2.
A bike covers a distance of 300 kilometers in 5 hours. Find its average speed?
Solution:
Bike covered distance = 300 kilometres
Total time taken = 5 hours
Average speed = Total distance covered/ total time taken
= 360/5 = 60 kilometres/hour.

Example 3.
Find the speed and average speed of a bus which leaves the bus station at 6 pm and reaches next day at 6 am the distance between the two bus stations is 600 kilometers and the total time for stoppage is 1 hour between these stations?
Solution:
Total time taken = 6pm to 6 am
= 12 hours
Time for stoppage = 1 hour
Actual time taken = 12 – 1 hour
Speed = total distance/ actual time taken
= 600/11 = 54.54 kilometres/ hour
Average speed = total distance covered/ total time taken
= 600/12 = 50
Including stoppage time = 50 kilometres/ hour

A person travels 20 kilometers in 2 hours. Find the speed of a person
Solution:
A person travels total distance = 20 kilometers
Time taken = 2 hours.

Therefore the units of measurement speed in kilometers per hour
Speed = distance travelled/ time taken
= 20/2 = 10 kilometres

A car covers a distance of 40 kilometers in 2 hours. Find its average speed?
Solution:
Average speed = total distance covered/Total time taken
Total distance covered = 40 kilometres
Total time taken = 2 hours
= 40/2 = 20 kilometres.
