Add and Subtract without using Number Line Worksheet

I. Evaluate the following without using the number line
(i)  solve (+6) + (+2)
(ii) Evaluate (+3) + (+7)
(iii) Evaluate (+8) + (-5)
(iv) Evaluate (-2) + (+1)

Solution:

Given two numbers are positive numbers.
Add the two numbers 6,2.
= 6 + 2
Attach ‘+’ sign to the sum.
= +8.
Therefore, by adding the two numbers +6,+2 we get +8.

(ii) Given two numbers are positive numbers.
Add the two numbers 3,7.
= 3 + 7
Attach the ‘+’ sign to the sum.
=+10.
Therefore, by adding the two numbers +3,+7 we get +10.

(iii) By subtracting the smaller number 5 from the bigger number 8; we get 8 – 5 = 3
Since the sign of the bigger number is + (positive), the result is also positive.
Therefore, by adding the two numbers (+8) + (-5) = +3.

(iv) By subtracting smaller number 1 from bigger number 4; we get 2 – 1 = 1.
As the sign of a bigger number is negative (-), the result is also negative.
Therefore, by adding the two numbers (-2) + (+1) = -1.

II. Solve the following without using the number line
(i) Evaluate (+6) + (-2)
(ii) Evaluate (-7) + (+4)
(iii) Solve (-2) + (-3)

Solution:

(i) By subtracting the smaller number 2 from the bigger number 6, we get 6 – 2 = 4
Since the sign of the bigger number is + (positive), the result is also positive.
Therefore, by adding the two numbers (+8) + (-5) is +3.

(ii) By subtracting a smaller number 4 from a bigger number 7, we get 7 – 4 = 3.
As the sign of a bigger number is negative (-), the result is also negative.
Therefore, by adding the two numbers (-7) + (+4) is -3.

(iii)The given two numbers are negative numbers.
The two numbers should be added and the negative sign should be attached to the sum obtained.
(-2) + (-3)=-5
Therefore, by adding the two numbers (-2) + (-3) is -5.

III. Subtract the following without using the number line
(i) Evaluate (+7) – (+4)
(ii) Evaluate (+6) – (-2)

Solution:

First, change the sign of the number to be subtracted and then add.
= (+7) + (-4)
By subtracting smaller number 4 from bigger number 7, we get 7 – 4 = 3
Since the sign of the bigger number is + (positive), the result is also positive.
= +3
Therefore, By subtracting +4 from +7 we get +3.

(ii) Given (+6) – (-2)

First, change the sign of the number to be subtracted and then add.
= (+6) + (+2)
We know that for adding a positive (+ ve) number to a positive (+ ve) number, the numbers should be added and a positive sign should be attached to the sum obtained.
= +8
Therefore, By subtracting -2 from +6 we get +8.

IV. Evaluate the following
(i) Solve (-9) – (+3)
(ii) Evaluate (-8) – (-7)

Solution:

(i) First, change the sign of the number to be subtracted and then add.
= (-9) + (-3)
We know, to add a negative number to a negative number, the numbers should be added and a negative sign should be attached to the sum obtained.
= -12
Therefore, By subtracting +3 from -9 we get -12.

(ii) First, change the sign of the number to be subtracted and then add.
= (-8) + (+7)
On subtracting smaller number 7 from bigger number 8, we get 8 – 7 = 1
As the sign of a bigger number is negative (-), the result is also negative.
= -1
Therefore, By subtracting +7 from -8 we get -1.

V. Solve the following without using the number line
(i) Evaluate (+3) – (-1)
(ii) Evaluate (+12) – (-5)
(iii) Evaluate (-10) – (-5)
(iv) Solve (-15) – (+4)

Solution:

(i) First, change the sign of the number to be subtracted and then add.
= (+3) + (+1)
We know that for adding a positive (+ ve) number to a positive (+ ve) number, the numbers should be added and a positive sign should be attached to the sum obtained.
= +4
Therefore, By subtracting -1 from +3 we get +4.

(ii)First, change the sign of the number to be subtracted and then add.
= (+12) + (+5)
We know that for adding a positive (+ ve) number to a positive (+ ve) number, the numbers should be added and a positive sign should be attached to the sum obtained.
= +17
Therefore, By subtracting -5 from +12 we get +17.

(iii)First, change the sign of the number to be subtracted and then add.
= (-10) + (+5)
On subtracting a smaller number 5 from a bigger number 10, we get 10 – 5 = 5
As the sign of a bigger number is negative (-), the result is also negative.
= -5
Therefore, By subtracting -5 from -10 we get -5.

(iv) First, change the sign of the number to be subtracted and then add.
= (-15) + (-4)
We know, to add a negative number to a negative number, the numbers should be added and a negative sign should be attached to the sum obtained.
= -19
Therefore, By subtracting +4 from -15 we get -19.
